The conversion of a student residence permit into a work permit will allow foreign students who have found work in Italy to reside in the country legally and subsequently apply for permanent residence and Italian citizenship.
Students who have obtained a degree in Italy, from an institution accredited by the Ministry of Education (MIUR), have the right to request a residence permit to find a job.
In case university students, after obtaining their diploma, have found a job or wish to open a self-employed entrepreneur in Italy, they must start the procedure of conversion of the student residence permit.
Students who have not graduated or from other private universities or language schools (not accredited by MIUR) must subsequently apply for residence permit conversion through the Prefecture.

DL 20/23 effectively provides (Art. 3(2)) that a residence permit issued for the purpose of study in any educational institution may be converted outside the quotas.
